Graphic Scores

More and more, I’ve been experimenting with ways of visually designating suggested parameters of sound, rather than choosing the sounds themselves. This certainly stems from a Cageian impulse to renounce deliberate choice in composing, but for me, it goes beyond that: I want to attempt to recreate the free-flowing processes of nature, often consisting of perceived irregularity/randomness at the micro level, but revealing structures and forces of constant transformation at the macro level. I found that translating some amount of these desired “macro processes” to the visual/graphic helped define the larger forms I want to tap into; in so doing, I am inviting interpreting musicians/performers to listen closely to themselves and each other as they explore how sound itself is a metaphor for the infinity of nature.
